Trekking over wild Velebit – Old

The first part of the route passes through the Northern Velebit National Park, which lies on the ridge of the Northern Velebit. Premužič's trail takes us through the wilderness, where we see wild Karst forms, crazy views of Kvarner and conquer peaks with beautiful views.

The trekking starts in Zavižan, continues to Alan and ends in Baške Oštarije. The trail is 57 km long, a viewing peak is conquered every day, a total of at least 1350 meters of altitudes walked. It was built in less than 4 years and opened in 1933. It is named after the engineer Ante Premužič. We walk all the time between 1500 m and 1200 m above sea level. An experienced guide will take you through the secrets of northern and central Velebit.

DURATION

DAY 1: Slovenia - Zavižan

The van transport starts from Mojstrana and stops in Kranj and Ljubljana, and then together we continue to Zavižan. We will cook dinner ourselves in the shared kitchen.

DAY 2: Zavižan (1594 m) - Rossijevo sklonište (1590 m) - Crikvena (1641m) - Alan (1340 m)

We start the trekking in the mountain hut on Zavižan (1594 m) from where we set off on our three-day adventure. From Zavižan, after a few hundred meters, we join the Premužič trail. This takes us through the wild karst landscape, through forests, past the strictly protected areas of Hajdučki and Rožanski kuki. We can have a snack from our backpack at Rossi's shelter. We continue through forests and meadows, climb to the top of Crikven (1641 m) all the way to Alan. The route is shortened by information boards every 700 m to 1 km, which offer us interesting flora and fauna in the Northern Velebit National Park.

DAY 3: Alan (1340 m) - Buljma (1451 m) - Skorpovac (958 m)

After a night on Alan, we will climb the neighboring hill Buljma (1451 m), where we have an incredible view of the Adriatic Sea and the islands of Pag, Rab, Goli, Prvič and Krk. On the other hand, on the Lika hinterland. For at least half of the way we walk along ridges, and the other half through forests. Since we walk at least half of the way along the ridges, it can be pleasantly warm in the spring months, and a bit windy. But with the right clothes, everything is normal. The second part is along forest paths, so we retreat a little into the shade. At the end of a long day, the Skorpovac bivouac (958 m) awaits us.

DAY 4: Skorpovac (958 m) - Budakovo brdo (1317 m) -  Visibaba (1160 m) - Baške Oštarije (950 m)

In the morning we set off on the last part of the path along the Premužič trail, where we first go to Budakovo brdo (1317 m). There we have views of the Dabar hills and on the other side the Adriatic. Then we join the Premužič trail again and continue all the way to Baške Oštarije, where the 57 km route ends. From there we will be transferred and taken back to Zavižan. Followed by transport back to Slovenia and arrival home in the evening.

The guide is intended for adults and children from the age of 15. (may also be younger, used to longer hikes). Trekking is not technically demanding, but at least 7 hours and more of walking are to be expected.

ACCOMODATION

Zavižan - mountain hut with rooms. The kitchen is available for sharing, where you can cook for yourself. Drinks can be purchased.

Alan - mountain hut, you can sleep in one of the larger rooms with shared beds. Dinners and breakfasts can be ordered. You can also buy drinks.

Skorpovac - bivouac, there are 12 beds that can not be booked in advance. There is also a stove for cooking, water is in front of the bivouac. In case of full occupancy, you can also sleep in front of the bivouac under the canopy.
